Who We Are

Retina Youth NZ is part of Retina NZ who is a member organisation of Retina International, also affiliated with the AMD Alliance International, and the Blind Foundation. Retina Youth is run by Retina NZ's youth coordinator/executive committee member Zane Bartlett.

Retina Youth is open to anyone between the ages of 15 and 35 with a retinal disorder or sight impairment, regardless of your degree of visual impairment. Family and friends are welcome to join too. Becoming a member is as easy as joining Retina Youth on facebook or becoming part of Retina NZ.

Most of our members have degenerative retinal disorders such as Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), Macular Degeneration (MD), Stargardt disease, or choroideremia.  Others have retinal damage as a result of diabetes, degenerative myopia, or retinal detachments which may have occurred spontaneously or resulted from injury. Some of these eye conditions are very rare. Most retinal disorders are degenerative and are found amongst the old. Much of it is genetic, so us younger generations might be diagnosed with the condition, leaving us in a tough position of not yet experiencing the full effects of the disorder and being anxious about an uncertain future of vision loss, with what would seem to be limited support.

what we're all about.

What We Do

Our aims are to promote and foster: public awareness of retinal disorders amongst youths;

information about retinal disorders and services for young people with retinal disorders;

mutual support by and for people with retinal disorders (and their families), and research into retinal disorders, their causes and effects, treatments and eventual cure. We maintain links with the research community, and with professional organisations like the Save Sight Society and the New Zealand Association of Optometrists who are active in promoting eye health and awareness of the causes of vision loss. We produce an awesome quarterly newsletter anyone keen for a good read, and co-ordinate a telephone-based peer support network that provides non-medical advice and information free to callers within New Zealand. We are always grateful for donations to our Retina NZ research fund to support medical and scientific research into retinal disorders.

Getting Together

We try to meet up in a few different areas of New Zealand each year.  We dont like to make it a heavy in your face event, we just like to get together and chill out. Meet other young people that are going through the same deal, so be sure to check dates on our News & Events page for the next meet up. With Retina NZ, A number of small self-help groups get together regularly.  Their meeting times and places are listed on Retina NZ's, News & Events page.
